Splat Space – Durham’s Hackerspace (http://splatspace.org) will be participating in the global hackerspaces.org monthly hackathon this Saturday, January 15th. Visit Splat Space from 1pm+ for a full day of collaboration and innovation. Splat Space will also be hosting an Arduino Hack Afternoon as part of the hackathon.
During the hackathon, we’ll be working together on the hackerspaces.org Cupcake Challenge. For this event, all the hackerspaces in the world have been challenged to ship a cupcake over 1,000 miles to another hackerspace in tasty and pristine condition.
Since additional points are accrued for the distance the cupcake travels, we contacted some friends over at the Tokyo Hackerspace and will be sending our SplatCake overseas, approximately 7,000 miles! More details on the challenge can be found here. Come out on Saturday to participate or follow the excitement on uStream!
Join us on Friday, November 12th at 7pm for a series of lightning talks from Splat Space members and the surrounding art and tech community at Durham’s hackerspace, Splat Space.
Lightning talks are 3-5 minutes in length and can be about anything that interests you. Technical and non-technical topics equally encouraged!
Food & beverages will be provided.
!! Prospective Speakers !!
If you’re interested in giving a talk, please submit your proposal idea and intent to speak to info at splatspace.org. Note: Most speakers will choose to use slides. If you plan on using slides, please submit them to info at splatspace.org no later than Thursday, November 11th at midnight.
!! Prospective Sponsors !!
We are accepting sponsors for this event. If you’re interested in sponsoring food, refreshments, or any aspect of this or future Lightning Talks events at Splat Space, please contact us at info at splatspace.org. Your support will make this event even more awesome.

Triangle Hackers member and co-organizer Ashley McClelland spoke on Thursday, September 16th, at ideaSPARK, the kickoff event for SPARKcon and the fourth PechaKucha Raleigh night.
THANK YOU to everyone from Triangle Hackers who came out to support us. We met a lot of great people at the event and reached a whole new crowd of people who had never heard of the hackerspace concept before. We’re hoping we’ve “sparked” some additional interest in hackerspaces throughout the Triangle.
(And if we did spark your interest, stop by Tuesday night at 7pm for our open meeting and weekly show & tell! All events listed on our meetup site at http://meetup.com/trianglehackers
Tuesday, September 14th, will be our first meeting in our new space! In short, we’ll discuss what we’re going to do with the space now that we have it. Everyone is invited!
Keys will be available for members who initially contribute $50 + $15 key deposit. If you contribute the $100 kickstart membership amount, your key deposit will be waived– and we love you forever!
We are also taking business sponsorships. For $200, you can be listed on our website (via your logo or a link to your website) and you’ll receive a dedicated spot inside the space to place promotional materials or display your logo.
A bunch of excited hackers spent today moving into the Durham hackerspace. Thank you to everyone who came out to support the effort! Hackerspace communities are all about cooperative, synchronous involvement. Thanks to that kind of involvement, we have a space and it’s getting more awesome by the minute. If you haven’t been a part of the effort up to this point, now’s the time to get involved. We would love your support and input in these formative stages. All are welcome, and always will be.
We’ll be at the space from 3pm-7pm on Sunday, September 12th if you didn’t get a chance to stop by today! Our first *official* meeting in the new space is on Tuesday, September 14th. At that meeting, we’ll be giving out keys to members.
Interested in becoming a member? Come to our next meeting and get to know us! Already been to a few meetings and deciding that you want to join? Join us again on Tuesday (or arrange an alternate time with us through the Google group if you cant make it: http://groups.google.com/group/durham-makerspace), donate $50-$100 via Paypal (normal dues are $50/month, but we’re requesting additional startup funds if possible) — And pick up your key on Tuesday!
We’re all looking forward to watching this grow. Grab some popcorn and check out a couple pictures and a short video from Day One at the Durham Hackerspace:

We have a long, awesome road ahead of us, and you should be a part of it, too. Amazing things happen when you work together. Cheers!
We’re officially signing the lease and moving in to the basement of the Snow Building at 331 W. Main Street on Friday!
On Saturday, we’ll be at the space all day, starting at 10am! All are welcome to join us! RSVP here: http://meetup.com/trianglehackers
We’ll be moving some things in, tinkering, planning, taking donations, and eating pizza. Come hang out with us! Bring your projects, but if you want to store them in the space, bring storage for them! The things we *really* need right now are:
Tables, chairs, couches (delivered), shelving, storage bins, tools, awesome stuff.
These things are welcome, needed, and much appreciated!
Lastly, if you want to be a member, have somewhere to store and work on your projects, and a key and 24×7 access, we’ll be taking member applications and dues on Saturday as well. All keys for members will be given out at Tuesday’s meeting.
Join The Durham Makerspace Google Group for regular updates, and/or follow @DurhamMakespace on twitter.
Hope to see you there!

Thank you everyone for your support, and we hope to see you all at our meeting tonight! Remember, we’ll get to take a sneak peak at the space and talk about our plans for it. Don’t miss it!
We’ll be meeting at Beyu Caffe on Tuesday, September 7th, at 7:00pm. (RSVP here!) Everyone in attendance will get a sneak peak at our prospective physical location for Durham Makerspace! (If you show up and we’re not upstairs in Beyu Caffe, that means we’re downstairs already. Call 704-HACK and someone will come let you in through the back door)
We’ve officially started the campaign to raise money to get the space started and get moved in ASAP. You can donate to the fund by clicking the Donate button on the left sidebar. We’ll list all contributions under your name or your business name, with a link to your blog or business presence if desired. If you’d like to donate anonymously, that’s ok, too! We appreciate your support in any way or form.
We’ll also be needing upcoming equipment donations once we move in, so feel free to add any resources you can contribute to the wiki.
Lastly, we’ve updated mission and goals for Triangle Hackers on our About page. Check it out, especially if you are new to the idea of hackerspaces and makerspaces.
Looking forward to a great meeting tomorrow night!
During Tuesday’s meeting at Serena, we achieved consensus on a number of different things. Here’s a summary of the meeting for those who were unable to make it.
(Detailed recap available: http://groups.google.com/group/triangle-hackerspace)
1 Space or 2?
- Multiple spaces seem like a good idea so that we can accommodate the #1 concern we learned from the survey, proximity to home and work.
- There’s no serious opposition to two spaces preventing us from moving forward, so that’s what we’ll do, starting with Downtown Durham. Another movement to start a space in the NCSU area is underway as well!
- We’ll continue to use TriangleHackers resources to help promote the growth and development of both spaces.
Durham Makerspace
- The Durham space will be called Durham Makerspace to start
- We will incorporate as Durham Makerspace (until/unless a better name comes along, we’ll keep it!)
- We will meet next Tuesday at Beyu Caffe and will have a tour of our prospective space in the basement
- Possible move-in date as early as September 10th if we can raise the money!
- Donations accepted through paypal:
Upcoming Action
- Paperwork to incorporate Durham Makerspace filed on 9/1
- New Google Group for Durham-specific discussion: http://groups.google.com/group/durham-makerspace
- Meeting next week in Downtown Durham @ Beyu Caffe to check out space: http://meetup.com/trianglehackers
- We’re opening bank account as soon as corp paperwork is filed. Donations accepted via Paypal in meantime (durhamspace@trianglehackers.com)
Volunteers needed:
- New web presence for Durham Makerspace
- Logo ideas, graphics, flyers for Durham Makerspace
- Someone to be “in charge of” the wiki
- Volunteers to look for chair, table, equipment donations for a move-in date in the next 2 weeks, TBA
- Those with Craigslist-fu in particular demand!
Thank you everyone for a great meeting and for your continued help and support! These are exciting times, and we’re really looking forward to the first meeting in the first Triangle Hackerspace!
We’ll be meeting on Tuesday, August 31st, at Serena’s in the RTP area. You can find more location information and RSVP to the meetup on http://www.meetup.com/trianglehackers/
We have a lot to talk about tomorrow! Visit the wiki for the proposed agenda. Feel free to edit it and add whatever YOU want to talk about, too. I recommend checking out the naming results and survey results, and adding your own opinions to those polls if you haven’t already: http://trianglehackers.com/wiki/index.php/Meetings
We’ll see you all tomorrow night at Serena’s!
