Meeting tomorrow– Tuesday, August 24th– at Beyu Caffe!

We’ll be meeting tomorrow night at 7:00pm at Beyu Caffe in Downtown Durham. Trivia night to follow if anyone’s up to it. :)

Beyu is pretty easy to get to if you’re coming from east or west. I’ve attached a map where I scribbled some suggestions. Googlemaps will tell you to take W Chapel Hill St to Main St, but if you turn early on Ramseur, you can park in the back of the building. There’s a large lot there. There should be parking along W Chapel Hill St in the side lot which is free as well, and there should be parking on the street in front of Beyu, too (though it’s a little more difficult to find out in front sometimes.)

Tomorrow the main topics on the agenda are:

  • Naming our Organization — Let’s continue discussion on this topic!
    Make your suggestion/votes here: http://goo.gl/mod/qyUq
  • Forming our organization — forming a nonprofit
  • Upcoming events, ideas for fundraising and outreach
  • Getting a space now versus waiting to get a space: benefits, problems, etc.
  • Discussion about space blimp launch from members of the team, plz?
    Slideshow here. Awesome! ->

See you there!

Recap of Tuesday Meeting + The Road Forward

Thank you to everyone who came out last night. Some of the major highlights from last night involved:

- Introductions – everyone’s background’s are always super interesting to hear
- Show & Tell of a theremin/air piano hackhttp://twitpic.com/2fqfl3
- Show & Tell of makerbot debugginghttp://twitpic.com/2fql2c
- Meeting at TechShop. Interesting discussions about the pro’s and con’s of techshop versus a hackerspace and general acknowledgement that both are awesome, but also different.
- Info on CyberSpark @ SPARKcon 2010 – contact @justis if interested
- Location discussion – Start checking out places. Best fit wins, mostly location agnostic at this point

Diving deeper into the development of the hackerspace
We had pretty involved discussion on the current direction of the hackerspace. A lot of people gave their opinions, and it rocked. We want to make it clear to everyone, as Alan said, that “Everyone is currently the President of the hackerspace.” We all own a share in making this happen. There are no numbers we are crunching or profit margins we’re adjusting. We just want to make this happen, and we want to set it up in a way that is sustainable and accessible for everyone interested in being a part of the hackerspace community. In short, everyone who wants this to happen should get involved as much as possible.

That being said, the best way for us all to stay connected on our efforts is by documenting our research on the wiki page and discussing via the newly formed google group. Moving forward, we should use these tools to stay connected on developments:

Meeting Tomorrow – TechShop RDU @ 7:00pm

We’ll be meeting at TechShop RDU tomorrow at 7:00pm in their conference room. Big thanks to TechShop RDU for reaching out to us at a time when we *really* needed a place to meet on a temporary basis. We appreciate it!

Tomorrow we’ll be talking about a variety of topics:

- Introductions: a MUST as we all get to know each other)

- Show & Tell:  in case anyone has any projects, hacks, or ideas to share, we’ll set aside a timeslot for that

- Communication: expressing needs/wants/budget, Wiki, Google Group, etc… How to get more involved if you’re interested in shaping the direction of things

- Location: scoping out spaces, the bigger picture for hackerspace(s) in the Triangle

- Organizing: we’re looking for volunteers for outreach, promotion, flyer & logo design, photography/video skillz, and/or a general willingness to donate time

We’ll also have a post-meetup beer social at the brewery next door for those who are interested. Everyone is invited.

5 Steps to Building a Hackerspace

Here is the second half of Alan Dipert’s talk at our first meetup. Alan covers 5 steps to starting a hackerspace. It’s poor quality, but we thought it’d be better than nothing for those who weren’t able to attend. Feedback is welcome!

Meeting Tomorrow – Hacker/Maker Show & Tell

We’ll be meeting tomorrow, Thursday, August 12th, from 7:00-9:00pm at the Warren Branch of the Durham Public Library on Fayetteville Rd.

Bring a project idea, something you’ve made, a cool hack, an idea for a hack, etc., for show and tell.

First Meeting == Success!

The first meeting was a blast. Thanks to everyone who came out, and everyone who was supporting us in spirit who couldn’t make it. We’re tentatively planning a meeting for next week and will announce the location once we’ve pinned it down. We will be meeting weekly. No worries if you can’t make it out every week. We’ll try to keep everyone involved as much as possible. Our plan is to meet weekly but hold larger events monthly. More details to come as we work out the kinks.

Again, thanks so much for the support. We had well over 30 people in attendance. The presentation was informative, introductions were extremely interesting (you guys are awesome!), and we had a couple great lightning talks on subjects from makerbots to teaching 4 year olds calculus.

First Meeting — Tonight!

We’re looking forward to an awesome night of getting to know everyone. Here is a note from one of the organizers about venue and event information:

Dear hackers,

This first meeting is all about getting to know one another and collecting vision. You can expect to learn more about hackerspaces. You can expect to meet lots of other cool people interested in the idea. And hopefully we’ll also have some time left over to dedicate towards brainstorming project and infrastructure ideas.

6:30: Pizza & drinks
7:00: I’ll give a short talk called “Hackerspaces: What they are, and how you make them”, Q & A
7:30: Introductions: What’s your name, and what are you interested in? Do you have any cool project ideas? What would you like to learn from, or teach to, others?
8:00: Discussion, and maybe a round of impromptu lightning talks

A Hackerspace is Forming in the Triangle

Our first meeting will take place on Friday, August 6th at Relevance in Downtown Durham (200 N. Mangum St.) During this meeting, we will discuss the planning and organization of a hackerspace in the Triangle area. Pizza & Refreshments will be served at 6:45 pm, and the meeting will start at 7:00 pm.

A brief presentation will be given on “What is a hackerspace?” and we will discuss the type of member-driven community we aim to create. Everyone is welcome. We are planning this from the ground level and encourage anyone with strong interest in this idea to contact us, show up at our meetings, and get involved.

For those who can’t make it to the first meeting (sorry 2600!), we’ll schedule a second meeting date shortly after. We plan to stream the first meeting for those who can’t make it. All of our meeting/streaming/planning  updates will be available via twitter (@trianglehackers) and meetup.com/trianglehackers.

Check back for more details as the date gets closer!
